Hekkie Budler defeated Renan Trongco via unanimous decision over 12 rounds here on Saturday night. The judges scored the fight 117-111 twice and 118-110 here at Emperors Palace in the East of Johannesburg. Budler retained his IBO strawweight title.
Budler was making the second defence of his title and looked sharp against the slippery Trongco. Budler used his superior boxing skills to counter his challenger, keping him at the end of his jab. Trongco did well to last the full 12 rounds having had to lose 4kg’s to make weight.
It became obvious by the 8th round that Trongco would need a knock out to win the fight and he went head hunting, Budler did well to keep maintain his concentration and not get caught by the wild punches from Trongco.
Budler finished off strongly in the 12th and final round and had Trongco in trouble.
Budler improved his record to 23 wins, including six knockouts, and one defeat, had won the IBO belt in September 2011 when he beat Michael Landero from the Philippines on points. Trongco, 24 years old, dropped to 12-4, with 8 knockouts.
Lerena defeats Corrales
Kevin Lerena beat a flabby looking Javier Corrales of Paraguay in an entertaining bout. Lerena better known as the KO Kid because of his power found Corrale to be a tough nut to crack and was made to work for his win.
Lerena won by scores of 59-55 on each of the cards over 6 rounds in this Catchweight fight. Corrales defied his looks and showed some useful skills and at times mixed it up with Lerena.
