Full Report: Budler Retains Title In Johannesburg

By Lwazi Ndzobongo:

Hekkie Budler retained his IBO strawweight title via 12 rounds split decision against Nkosinathi Joyi. Budler used his fast hands and feet to outbox Joyi here at Emperors Palace in the East of Johannesburg. The Judges scored the fight 112-116, 115-113 and 116-113 for Budler.

Budler used his speed advantage to great effect, darting in and out whilst landing scoring shots on the slower Joyi. The fight lived up to it’s hype and provided some good action for the crowd in attendance.

Joyi was predictable for most of the war, he was looking to hurt Budler via the body and led with his left downstairs followed by a right hand. This proved successful and was telling on Budler in the later rounds.

Budler will to win and speed were still too good for Joyi, who just couldn’t land a solid punch to Budler’s head despite being touted as the heavier puncher.

At the end of the twelfth there was little to separate the two warriors and it came down to what the judges liked more, Budler’s hand speed and footwork or Joyi’s body banging. They went for Budler, can see calls for a rematch on this one.

Very impressive showing by Budler against a formidable foe, he improves 23-1 whilst Joyi drops to 23-2-1.

On the Undercard, Ryno Liebenburg beat Johnny Muller over 12 rounds of brawling to win the IBO Intercontinental Light Heavyweight title. The fight became messy as Muller tried to rough up the better skilled Liebenburg but at the end proved unsuccessful. Liebenburg came out the deserved winner.

Gideon Buthelezi was unsuccessful in defending his IBO Jnr Bantamweight Title against Edrin Dapudong. He was caught flush on the chin with a left hook that sent him to the canvass and was unable to get up before the referee reached the count of 10. Disappointing display for Buthelezi and a vindication for Dapudong who many thought had won their first fight.

Undercard results :
IBO super flyweight title Edrin Dapudong w tko 1 Gideon Buthelezi ,
light flyweight Thabang Ramagole w pts 6 Lerato Kgole
IBO Inter Continental Light Heavyweight title Ryno Liebenburg w pts 12 Johnny Muller
