Higa Humbles Fuentes in One

by Derek Bonnett

Japan’s Daigo Higa retained his WBC flyweight title for the second time with a rib-bruising first round KO over former world champion Moises Fuentes. Higa’s 112-pound strap was on the line at Prefectural Budokan, Naha, Japan.

Mexico’s Fuentes towered over Higa, looking taller than the reported three inch difference, but only stood long enough to prove the old adage, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Higa, 22, was economic with his punches initially and looked to be feeling his Mexican foe out. However, the champion must have felt something early as he began assailing Fuentes with heavy overhand rights. Fuentes was rocked twice in the second minute of the bout. Higa capitalized on Fuentes’ high guard as he retreated and landed a single right hand to the body. Fuentes, 30, spun to the canvas, rising just as he was counted out.

Higa maintained his 100% knockout ration in moving to 15-0-0 (15) and remains one of the hottest young talents in boxing. Fuentes, the victor only one in his last four bouts, crashed to 25-5-1 (14).
