Jean Knocks Out Pendarvis on ShoBox

By Jason Pribila: ShoBox fans were treated to a junior welterweight battle between undefeated Dierry Jean (25-0, 17KO) and Cleotis Pendarvis (17-4-1, 6 KO). At stake was a mandatory title shot against current IBF titlist Lamont Peterson.

Jean, who fights primarily in Canada, traveled to an empty casino in Oklahoma for the most important fight of his career. Jean began the fight as the aggressor. He worked behind his jab and alternated hard rights to Pendarvis’ body and head. Pendarvis failed to follow through with his promise to be aggressive, but did find success by countering and tying up Jean.

In round three an accidental butt opened a cut over Jean’s left eye. The blood flowed, but luckily it poured down Jean’s cheek rather than into his eye. The sight of blood gave Pendarvis confidence and gave the bout added drama.

Round four was fought evenly until the fate of both fighters was forever changed with a straight right hand. Jean landed what was the equivalent of a one punch knockout he threw a right that Pendarvis never saw. To his credit, Pandarvis made it to his feet, but his step toward Referee Ritter would have been grounds for him to fail even the loosest of sobriety tests.

The fight continued, for a few more seconds, as a Jean flurry forced the bout to be waved off.

With the win Jean becomes the mandatory for Lamont Peterson’s IBF title.

Depending on what happens between Paterson and Matthysse next weekend will determine who Jean will face for his title shot. That being said, after answering this challenge, Jean’s only remaining questions will be who, when and where?

On the televised opener undefeated junior middleweights Geovanni Rodriguez and John Thompson squared off in an 8 round bout.  Thompson is trained by Buddy McGirt and entered the ring in possession of better skills while being more active than the self-described awkward Rodriguez.

I got to see Thompson ringside in his last fight and I was impressed by his speed and jab.  However, I did note that he often backed straight up with his chin exposed.  Tonight was no different as commentator Steve Farhood also commented that Thompson’s chin remained un-tucked when he threw his right hand.

Thompson jumped out to an early lead on the scorecards, which was important since this was the first time he was scheduled to fight beyond 6 rounds.  Rodriguez found success as he closed the distance in the third.  That success was fool’s gold as he soon found himself in harm’s way.  The result was falling victim to two flash knockdowns.

Thompson controlled the pace and distance as the fight went on, but always seemed in danger due to his often exposed chin and stamina.

A desperate Rodriguez moved forward in the final round knowing that he needed a knockdown to win.

Thompson remained calm and hurt the charging Rodriguez and again sent his foe to the canvas.  A second knockdown followed, but Rodriguez made it to the final round on his feet.

The official scores reflected the action in the ring, as Thompson was declared the unanimous winner by scores of 78-70, 78-71, and 78-70.

With the victory Thompson improved to 12-0, 4 KO and Rodriguez fell to 8-1, 5 KO
