Jesus Soto Karass scored a spectacular 12th round knockout of Andre Berto to claim the vacant NABF welterweight title at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday.
Karass, 28-8-3-(18), started fast, wobbling Berto in the opening round but Berto roared back in the next couple of rounds to hurt Karass several times. Karass, however, recovered quickly to force Berto onto the back foot. Berto, 28-3-(22), then appeared to hurt his right shoulder as Karass took full advantage. Berto, though, dug deep, held firm and even managed to deck Karass in the 11th round before Karass unleashed a cracking left hook to deck Berto after 0.48 of the 12th and final round.
Berto was ahead on two cards by scores of 105-103 while the third official made the fight even at 104-104.
On the undercard undefeated lightweight Omar Figueroa, 22-0-1-(17) scored a 12 round unanimous decision win over Nihito Arakawa, 24-3-1-(16), to win the WBC interim lightweight title.
Figueroa scored a knockdown in round two and another in round six of a close fight that saw both men exchanging some big bombs. Arakawa fought back late on but it was not enough to sway the judges, who scored the bout 118-108 twice and 119-107, all for Figueroa.
In a battle of unbeaten welterweights, Keith Thurman, 21-0-(19) scored a 10th round knockout of Diego Chaves to claim the WBA interim welterweight title. The early rounds were close but all that changed when Thurman decked Chaves with a body shot. Thurman then jumped all over Chaves in round 10 and floored him again after 0.28 of the 10th round. Thurman picked up an extra $10,000 for having the KO Kings II knockout of the night.
