By Mike Coppinger at ringside: Washington--In a lightweight rematch, Dean “Pit Bull” White (15-10-2, 7 KOs) and Verquan “The Show” Kimbrough (21-2-3, 7 KOs) fought to an eight-round draw in the featured bout of the 20th annual Fight Night charity boxing event at the Hilton ballroom in Washington on Thursday.
In their first encounter in ‘07, Kimbrough won a controversial decision in a fight that was televised on VERSUS. White wanted redemption, but would have to settle for a draw, as he started the fight slowly, picking and choosing his spots and not really opening up offensively.
Around the middle rounds, White seemed to find his pace, waiting for Kimbrough to force the action and counterpunching effectively. White opened up a cut on Kimbrough’s right eye, but didn’t capitalize on it, content to continue counterpunching. White forced the pace more in the last three rounds, but he gave away too many of the early rounds to pull out the decision. Scores were 77-75 for White, 77-75 for Kimbrough and 76-76 even.
In other action, super middleweight Robert “X-rated” Reed (2-0, 2 KOs) spoiled Jason Johns’ professional debut in scintillating fashion, knocking him through the ropes in the first stanza. Referee Joseph Cooper waved the bout without a count at 1:45 of the first round.
Also on the card, cruiserweights Venroy July (2-0-1, 1 KO) and Fred McClinton battled it out to a four-round draw. McClinton dropped July in the first round, but could not finish him. Scores were 38-37 for July, 39-37 for McClinton and 38-38 even.
Many boxing legends were on hand for the charity event, such as Roy Jones Jr., “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Aaron “The Hawk” Pryor, “Smokin” Joe Frazier and Ken Norton. November 5, 2009
