Hometown favorite Sergio “Micky” Lopez put on a dominating performance to win the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) International Featherweight title against compatriot Jesus Navarro on Friday, October 18, at the Gimnasio Oscar ’Tigre’ García in Ensenada, Mexico.
Lopez, who remains undefeated in Ensenada, made his mark from the start and scored a knockdown in the first round. While he was not able to finish matters then and there, it set the tone for the remainder of the bout.
Southpaw puncher “Kalaka” Navarro tried at times to take over with aggressive spurts, but Lopez always managed to fend him off and land his own shots to body and head.
After ten rounds of boxing in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Lopez was awarded a landslide and deserved unanimous decision by scores of 99-90, 100-90 and 97-92.
“Everything went according to our game plan. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the knockout, but I felt very good in the ring and everything we practiced in the gym worked”, said the new champion after the fight.
With the impressive victory, Sergio Lopez improved his professional record to 17-7 (11), while Jesus Navarro goes back to Mexicali with a 21-7-1 (16) ledger.
Promoter was Hefziba Eduardo Promotions.
