Mbamba and Briones Secunda

By Lwazi Ndzobongo: Evans Mbamba and Mario Briones fought to a majority draw in their junior featherweight title bout here at Graceland Casino in Secunda. The judges scored it 114 - 114 twice and 117 - 111 Mbamba to leave the WBF belt still vacant.

Mbamba and Briones were involved in a brawl for most of their bout, Briones throwing combintions that for the most part landed on the arms and gloves of Mbamba. Mbamba spent to much time countering whilst against the ropes, even though he landed the more effective head shots throughout the fight. Mbamba will be disappointed at not claiming the vacant title in his home country against the Mexican.

The 31-year-old Mbamba now with a professional record of 18-3-1 and Briones, 27, 24-3-2, might want to do it all again.

On the undercard Gabisile Tshabalala gave all in attendance a real fright as she had to be revived after collapsing due to two body shots from her opponent Shannon O’Connell. It was in the seventh round when O’Connell landed the two devastating blows that sent Tshabalala to the canvass, she received immediate ringside attention as she was put on oxygen and the drip was administered to her.

It took over half an hour before she was stretchered off by medical staff, with worried on lookers. They were fighting for the womens WBF featherweight title, O’Connell was declared the winner, official time was 36 seconds into the seventh round. In an entertaining bout, O’Connell was the aggressor throughout, with Tshabalala happy to sit back and try counter her Australian opponent.

Tshabalala has since recovered and is well.
