Jamie McDonnell,24-2-1-(11), was crowned world champion for the second time when he scored a 10th round knockout victory over Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat, 52-3-(34) to claim the vacant WBA bantamweight title at Wembley Stadium in London, England on Saturday.
The former IBF champ broke down Rachawat and finished him off with a left hook to the head after 2:00 of the 10th.
On the Froch Vs Groves undercard James DeGale,19-1-(13), impressively stopped the previously unbeaten Brandon Gonzalez(18-1-1-(10), after 2.38 of the fourth round. DeGale decked Gonzales before following up with a series of attacks to force the stoppage. The bout was an IBF super middleweight title eliminator.
In another IBF eliminator, this time at lightweight, Kevin Mitchell, 38-2-(28), scored a tko win over the previously unbeaten Ghislain Maduma, 16-1-(1). Mitchell scored two knockdowns in the 11th round to finish off an exhausted Maduma after 2.56. Maduma was ahead in the fight until the stoppage.
Although Mitchell made the 135lb lightweight limit at Friday’s weigh-in, his overnight weight gain exceeded the percentage the IBF allows so Mitchell will not get an opportunity to face IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vasquez.
One fighter that did have an easy night’s work was Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua, improved to 6-0-(6), when he destroyed Matt Legg, 7-3-(3), after just 83 seconds of the first round..
