By Erich Glavitza: Roberto Santos Santos,18-6-3, retained his European Union middleweight title by virtue of a 12 round majority draw against Marcos Nader in Schwechat, Austria on Friday night.
Viennese boxing fans were disappointed by the outcome of the 12 round bout as the judges followed the old rules: the challenger has to make the fight.
Nader,16-0-1, controlled the fight during the first part of the fight with fast jabs, brisk combinations and avoided Santos’ ramming left hand, by stepping out of reach just in time. The tide turned around at the midway point, when the sturdy Spaniard started rolling forward like a tank, bloodying Nader’s nose and scoring now and then with his left hand. Nader was running out of gas a little bit during the final rounds of the fight, so the judges saw his efforts as not enough to dethrone the man from Valencia.
At the end of the 12 round bout two judges made the fight even at 114-114 while the third official made Nader the winner 115-114.
