'Redemption or Retirement' Undercard Report

Audley was the star on Saturday
Audley was the star on Saturday

By Wayne Bartlett: Audley Harrison deservedly grabbed the headlines for his performance on Steve Goodwin’s ‘Redemption or Retirement’ bill, but on a bumper ten fight undercard,Nathan ‘Sugar Boy’ Weise was surely the star.

Boxing beautifully to outmaneuver and outpunch the tough Jeff Thomas, a spearing left right in round two followed by a hard left hook, caused the Lancashire fighter to sag.

The danger signal was spotted superbly by referee Jeff Hinds, who stepped in to save Thomas to no complaints; as Weise looked to close out what was a quite brilliant show.

Kris Agyei-Dua was another boxer on form on Saturday as he dropped hard-man Jason Ball twice en route to a 58-55 points win.

Boxing superbly at times off the back-foot with Ball constantly pushing forward, the only time Agyei-Dua was allowed to rest was the two times Ball was on the deck in rounds four and five.

In the shortest fight of the night, Ryan ‘Crash Bang’ Taylor made quick work of opponent Aleksejs Potjomkins to stop his man in less than two minutes.

After being rattled by a hard right from Taylor, a wobbling Potjomkins had to ship two more hard rights for good measure before the referee could dive in and call a halt.

Billy Cayzer was touted as one to watch before Saturday’s show but he’ll have some serious work to do on his defence as he progresses after going through hell against Raimonds Sniedze.

Earning a 39-38 verdict with grit more than anything, Cayzer shipped hard, straight shots throughout the bout that saw Sniedze suffer a point deduction in the last round.

A real grudge match took place in the chief support to the main event that saw Michael Devine outbox Robert Deakin over four rounds.

In as big a grudge match as I’ve seen due to a heated build-up, Devine kept his head in front of a raucous support to win a clear-cut decision.
