Rios Outpoints Ramos in Indio

By: Mike Sloan: The Showtime-televised main event between rising contenders Ronny Rios and Rico Ramos was expected to be an entertaining battle. Per the norm, ShoBox cards are typically easy to view and they display usually young talent with bright futures in the sport of boxing.

Rios and Ramos got one of those aspects of the fight correct; promising young contenders displaying their talents for the world to see. However, the fight itself wasn’t aesthetically pleasing and though Rios was awarded a unanimous decision win, his performance wasn’t eye-opening.

Rios utilized a plethora of tricks to offset much of what his foe threw at him and when he needed to, he took the fight to Ramos on the inside. Ramos, who has now lost two of his last three contests, was content on staying on the outside and waiting for opportunities to counter. Rios picked up on that ploy and nullified Ramos’ tactics. Many of the rounds were close enough, but Ramos’ lack of activity and low punch output cost him dearly; he gave away far too many rounds than Rios emphatically won. Whatever the case may be, though, Rios was the aggressor and landed by far the better, cleaner punches throughout the duel.

In the end, the three judges all favored Rios (20-0, 9 KOs) with scores of 97-93, 96-94 and 100-90; Secondsout.com also had it for Rios by the margin of 97-93. For his efforts, Ramos fell to 21-2 with 11 KOs.

In the co-feature, surging prospect Daquan Arnett won a unanimous eight round decision over Brandon Quarles to improve to 10-0 with 6 KOs. Quarles (9-1-1, 2 KOs) rocked Arnett early and was the aggressor for the first half of the fight, but his gas tank betrayed him. Arnett eventually found a rhythm and took the fight to Quarles and coasted toward the end. Arnett won via tallies of 78-73, 77-74 and 76-75.
