Local hero Mario Rodriguez became the first boxer from Guasave to be crowned a world champion when he dethroned IBF minimumweight titleholder Nkosinathi Joyi in Sinaloa, Mexico on Saturday.
Rodriguez, 15-6-4-(11),made a slow start allowing Joyi, 22-1-(15),to control the fight early on but Rodriquez continued to march forward and gradually fought his way back into the fight with a well timed series of combination punches.
Rodriquez’ efforts paid off after 2.07 of the seventh round when a left hook to the top of the head and right cross sent Joyi crashing to the canvas and was counted out.
