Rubio Ko's Spada To Claim Interim Middleweight Title

Middleweight Marco Antonio “Veneno” Rubio, 59-6-1-(51), knock out Domenico “Vulcano” Spada, 38-5-(19), to in the 10th round to claim the WBC interim middleweight title on Saturday night at the Gran Estadio in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico.

A well timed left hook did the damage to earn Rubio another crack at the middleweight title.

Spada came to fight and was admirably aggressive, albiet crudely so throughout, but a lot of it was rough house tactics Spada was repeatedly holding and hitting, and more significantly rabbit punching. After a number of warnings. The Referee deducted two points in the sixth.

Rubio hadn’t had a fight in more than six months and it showed. He intelligently used his long jab and followed up with effective straights rights to the body and head. But he was often too tentative, waiting for an opening instead of creating one.

The low volume of punches, encouraged Spada to keep swarming forward.
Rubio’s heavier and more accurate punching, especially to the ribcage, was starting to tell from the seventh onwards, with Spada slowing and retaliating more seldom, and appreciably less accurately.

Rubio’s boxing skills served him perfectly, as Spada walked forward with his hands slung low.

Rubio cracked him flush with a superbly timed left hook. It felled the Italian like a sack of wet cement, and the Referee immediately and without a jot of hesitation waved the bout off.

As the home crowd erupted in joy, Spada look on stunned in disbelief as if to say: "What on earth hit me?"

The time of the stoppage was 1.38. At the time of the KO, Rubio was comfortably ahead by scores of 89-80, 90-79 and 88-81.

In the co-feature, middleweight Marco “Dorado” Reyes (30-1, 24 KOs)
knocked out erratic journeyman Idiozan Matos (32-19, 26 KOs) in round two.
