Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: It was historic, the first ever pro boxing show at the Resorts World Casino in Queens, NY. Promoted by the triumvirate; New Legend, Old World, and W.O.N. Boxing, eighteen young battlers put on nine exciting fights that kept the almost filled to capacity venue hopping.
The main event featured rugged, once beaten Joe Smith Jr., 173 ½ pounds, giving no chance to opponent Yasin Rashid, 174 ¼ pounds, to survive. He battered Brooklyn’s Rashid to the canvas four times before referee Eddie Claudio called it off at 1:57 of round three. Smith up his record to 11-1 (11 KOs), and Rashid saw his numbers fall to 7-3 (2 KOs).
Unbeaten Frank Galarza, 7-0-1 (4 KOs), fought to an eight round draw with another undefeated fighter Alantez Fox, 7-0-1 (3 KOs), so the vacant NYS Junior-Middleweight Championship remains that way, vacant. As tall as Galarza is, Fox, 152 pounds, was bigger. It was Galarza pressing forward and the long armed Fox jabbing and punching from outside. This reporter saw it 5-3 in rounds for Galarza, 153 pounds, but the Judges were split, 77-75 for each man and 76-76, even. Benji Estevez refereed.
