Robert Stieglitz regained the WBO super middleweight title via three round technical knockout against current champ Arthur Abraham at the GETEC Arena in Magdeburg, Germany on Saturday night.

Stieglitz, 44-3,who lost his title to Abraham in 2012, was judged the winner after the fight was stopped due to a serious cut around Abraham’s eye.

The Russian-born Stieglitz opened a cut just above the left eye of Abraham, 36-4, in the second round, and by the end of the third, it was swollen shut. A third and deciding fight could well be on the cards.

After regaining the title the new champ said:: It was a pretty quick process. I would have thought that it would take longer. I worked hard on my right hand. It paid off.” When asked if there would be a rematch, Stieglitz said I always enjoy boxing against Arthur Abraham. I hope the managers agree. I’m ready.”

Stieglitz may just get his wish as Abraham too is happy to fight a rubbermatch; “My eye is closed and the referee stopped the fight. I was fair and had allowed him a rematch. Now it’s at 1-1. I hope that he is fair and there will be a rematch,” said Abraham.

On the undercard WBO No.1 heavyweight contender Robert Helenius, 19-0-(11), won a clear 10 round unanimous decision over former British champion Michael Sprott, 37-20-(17). ‘The Nordic Nightmare” won by scores of 98-93, 97-93, 98-92 on all three judges cards.

British Super middleweight George Groves kept his world title ambitions very much alive by scoring a second round tko win over Baker Barakat. A series of right hands by Groves did the damage.

Edmund Gerber survived a late rally from Gbenga Oloukun to win a close eight round unanimous decision in a heavyweight bout. The scores were 77-76 twice and 77-75.

At Middleweight Lukas Konecny, 49-4-( 23) won a 12 round technical decision over  Karim Achour, 14-4-2-(3), in a bout for the vacant WBO European middleweight title. The bout went to the cards after Konecny suffered a series of cuts after being head butted. The scores were 118-110 twice and 16-112.
