Denton Vassell shook off the ring rust to stop the Ronnie Heffron in the sixth round to retain his Commonwealth welterweight title at the MEN Arena in Manchester on Friday night.
Vassell, 20-0-(10), delivered two fast and ferocious uppercuts to finish the job after 1.56 of the sixth session. Vassell had not fought for over a year and took some time to recover his timing but when he did, the punches started flowing and Heffron was slowly being taken apart.
Heffron matched Vassell early on and even won the opening session but Vassell’s greater physical strength and experience eventually proved too much for the brave but out-gunned Heffron, who hails from nearby Oldham.
The main attraction on the undercard saw former professional Cricketer turned tv personality Freddie Flintoff make his boxing debut against American Richard Dawson. Flintoff, who was outweighed by nearly 25lbs, survived a second round knockdown to out-point Dawson by a single point, 39-38.
