Zhong Wins China’s First World Boxing Title


Xiong Zhao Zhong (20-4-1, 11 KOs) won a unanimous 12 round decision over Javier Martinez Resendiz (13-4-2, 6 KOs) to win the vacant WBC minimumweight world title at the Kunming City Stadium in Kunming in China on Saturday.

 

As expected the fight was fought ar high tempo for the first half of the fight and looked pretty even but Zhong moved up a gear after the sixth round to extend his lead and when the points were totaled he ran out a .116-114 116-112, and 119-110 winner to become the first Chinese boxer. To become a world champion.

 

Martinez finished the fight with a cut over one of his eyes but there was no knockdowns.

 

On the undercard former world heavyweight title challenger Okello Peter (21-6, 19 KOs) defeated Washington State resident Freddie Miller (3-7-1, 2 KOs) by way of fourth round tko.

 

Both men were decked in round three. Miller was hurt badly against the ropes in the fourth round when the referee stepped in to stop the bout.
