Understanding the difference between amateur and professional gloves

By Everlast

Everlast amateur and professional boxing gloves are a result of extensive testing, research and years of experience. Traditionally, boxing gloves were leather mittens filled with either hog or horse curled hair for padding. Although hair is an effective padding, it had many serious drawbacks.

As the official supplier of the boxing equipment for the 1984 Olympics, Everlast extensively invested in research and product development to improve and produce the most consistent and effective padding for competitive gloves. Special impact and shock absorption tests on thousands of samples of various padding were performed by Wayne State University.

The test resulted in a superior foam padding filler consisting of a special combination high shock absorbing, abrasive resistant, closed cell foam Polyethylene Vinyl Chloride (PVC) and Latex that became the standard for all international amateur gloves. A similar follow-up test was performed for the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) at Technical University in Berlin in 1991.

All Everlast international amateur approved and professionally sanctioned fight gloves must withstand the most rigorous punishment. Professional and amateur gloves are very similar except that amateur gloves have a specially designed elastic cover over the hand opening.

Amateur gloves are used over and over again and frequently change from competitor to competitor. The elastic cover is designed to standardize the fastening of the glove to the fighter's hand as well as consistently covering the hand opening, preventing some injuries. Professional fight gloves still have the traditional laced opening, which after being laced-up is covered with medical adhesive tape--desired by all sanctioning bodies, most fighters and managers.

All Everlast professional and amateur fight gloves are constructed out of smooth soft leather and must strictly adhere to all specifications for construction and weight from international and national governing bodies regulating boxing.

Building on the past and on our unmatched experience, today's Everlast professional fight gloves have integrated the same technology of shock absorbing padding learned from our experience with amateur gloves. This results in our professional fight gloves being held to the highest industry standard as well as offering the greatest appeal to the boxer.
