Khan To Appeal Ban/Edwards Defeated In World Champs

Haroon Khan, the brother of WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan, is to appeal the the decision not to allow him to represent Pakistan at the London 2012 Olympic Game.

Khan, 20, has been told by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) he cannot box for Pakistan.

"The Pakistan boxing federation got an email that Haroon can’t represent them as he represented England as a youth," Haroon’s father Shah Khan told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We sent letters out to AIBA and we’re hoping that they’ll accept all this."


In other amateur news Croydon’s Charlie Edwards’ has been defeated in the first round of the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Azerbaijan.

The 18-year-old lost 17-15 on points to Argentine Junior Zarate this morning.

The defeat means he will have to wait to secure qualification for next year’s Olympics
Edwards and Zarate both scored five points in each of the opening two rounds - but Zarate registered seven compared to Edwards’ five in the third session .

Edwards’ coach and father Larry Edwards told the Staines Guardian: "The coaches say it was close but they thought Charlie had won it.

"Charlie is heartbroken now. "He has to wait until the European Championships next April to get his place for the Olympics now."
