Maloney: 'I will Never Sign Another Boxer'

Promoter Frank Maloney has said that he intends to quit boxing once all his fighters have seen out their contracts.

During almost three decades in the sport, Maloney has promoted the likes of Lennox Lewis, but intends to walk away due to the stress and hurt caused by the recent inquest into the death of Olympic medallist Darren Sutherland.

27-year-old Sutherland was found hanging at a property in Bromley back in September 2009 after battling depression.

The inquest was told that the boxer wanted to quit the sport but feared to do so because he was worried about the reaction he would receive from Maloney.

This has lead to the promoter receiving hundreds of abusive messages from fans on social networking sites.

Maloney said: "My conscience is totally clear. I don’t like how people try to paint people in boxing, I don’t need the stress factor.

"I have had enough of it. I’ve had enough of people thinking we’re all crooks or charlatans. I will never sign another boxer."
