WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly may well have a degree in Mathematics but bitter rival Tony Bellow insists his boxing skills just do not add up.
The undefeated Welsh brainbox defends his WBO crown against the 28 year-old challenger at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday night and believes the champion’s lack of boxing skills will be his downfall.
”People have made him out to be this animal mathematician, played him out to be this guy who walks around with a cap and gown on and eats light-heavyweights for fun,” said Bellew, said the undefeated boxer talking to the Liverpool Echo.
“He may be a clever kid and is good at maths but that’s the only thing he can teach me, he can’t teach me anything about boxing.
“People mention his maths degree more than they mention his boxing ability. It’s never ‘Nathan Cleverly, let’s look at his boxing skills’.
“He boxes the same way every single time. He boxed Karo Murat, 5’11”, head on, he fought Tony Oakey, 5’10”, head on and Nathan Cleverly is 6’2”.
“He fought Danny McIntosh, a crude slugger at best, head on and gave McIntosh chances to nail him.
Bellow added: “He’s never ever proved that he can go backwards. He comes forward, throws punches in bunches and leaves his chin in the air. I am going to hit him a lot harder than anyone has hit him in his whole career. And I can pick a punch better than anyone he has fought and if I wanted to, I could go in and box him. But I don’t see that being an option because I am going to have to match his workrate at some point and when I do, it means he’s going to get hit and hit often.”
