Former world champions Tim Witherspoon and Richie Woodhall were among the boxing nobility in attendance at the official opening of Team Sparta 300 Gym, a new boxing and fitness centre at Chingford Golf Range on Waltham Way, London E4.

The fully equipped gym is a partnership between fitness specialist Mick Croft, boxing coach/bookmaker Ian Wilson and ex-professional boxer Dominic Negus, who was responsible for giving former Olympic gold medalist and world title challenger Audley Harrison his first real test at heavyweight back in 2002.

‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon, who successfully defended his WBA heavyweight crown back in 1986 against Frank Bruno at Wembley, stated: “These guys are like family. It’s great to see some old friends here, and I wish Dominic, Mick, Ian and the rest of the guys at Team Sparta 300 great success.”

Negus, who is still hugely popular on the IBA circuit, stated: “I’m putting everything into this, and we’re determined to make a go of it. I’ve got huge confidence in Mick (Croft - head of fitness) and Ian (Wilson, boxing coach) and we’ve got some great kids training in the gym.”

Among these is Lee Markham, 23, who makes his professional debut on the undercard of Tyson Fury v Dereck Chisora on the 23rd July at Wembley. Markham, from Grays, achieved 30 wins from 43 amateur bouts fighting out of the Five Star Amateur club in Romford. Trained by Len Butcher, he starts his pro career at middleweight and has been looking sharp in sparring as he aims to impress on the Mick Hennessy bill.

Also fighting out of the Team Sparta 300 Gym are Butch Goldhawk (27), who makes his pro debut soon at Cruiserweight, Paul Braddock (IBA Southern Area super middleweight champion) and Kevin Greenwood (IBA Southern Area Cruiserweight champion).

A fantastic turnout at the launch witnessed the opening ribbon being cut by comedian and actor Ricky Grover, perhaps better known as fictional hardcase ‘Bulla’. Grover, a former boxer, is currently appearing in Eastenders as Heather Trott’s latest fancy man. He revisits his ‘worlds hardest man’ character Bulla in the feature length ‘Big Fat Gypsy Gangster’, which also stars Stephen Berkoff, Omid Djalilli and Tulisa Contostavlos (Ndubz) and is set for release at the end of August. Grover will be keeping himself in shape at the Team Sparta 300 Gym.
