Buckland Vows To Storm Castle on July 24

By Aaron Screen: Ricky Hatton’s latest signing Gary Buckland talks to SecondsOut about his upcoming lightweight title elimination bout with Henry Castle at Newport Centre on July 24th.

Welshman, Buckland who is 15-1 since his transition into the paid ranks, has a great chance to stamp his authority on the British Lightweight scene in two weeks time, and the man from Cardiff could not be more confident in the build-up to what is without doubt the biggest fight of his promising career.

Buckland, who is currently in the midst of training for July 24, was gracious enough to spare some to talk to SecondsOut:

Aaron Screen - Firstly congratulations on securing the fight, I’m sure these are exciting times for you especially with your recent signing to Hatton Promotions, how did your signing to Hatton promotions come to fruition?

Gary Buckland: What it was I was with Frank Maloney, but things didn’t go to plan, so I ended up going to Hatton’s Gym and doing a bit of training up there, I spoke to his lawyer Gareth Williams, and after a little chat he decided to sign me up, they were happy with my record and the way my career was going so they signed me up.

AS: It must fill you with pride to know someone of Ricky’s calibre has been following your career and wanted to add you to his growing list of fighters, what was it like for you when everything was finalised?

GB: It was great, he put an article in the local paper two weeks ago saying he was looking forward to seeing me and to announce he had signed me up which was great.

AS: Your due to fight Henry Castle on July 24th this is without doubt the biggest fight of your career - Do you feel under any pressure to not just win but also put on a good performance considering the exposure this fight will give you in Britain?

GB: Yeah definitely it’s the most pressure I’ve ever had for a fight not only that it’s a British Eliminator and everything’s on this fight, I’m looking forward to putting on a good performance.

AS: How has your training camp been going?

GB: It’s been great; I’ve been training now for five weeks, with two weeks left, that’s seven weeks three times a day, the weights down so I’m ready to go really.

AS: You mentioned that you trained at Ricky’s recently opened gym, can you tell us a bit about what that was like?

GB: I trained there about four weeks ago; it’s by far the best gym I’ve ever seen, great facilities and I’m glad I was given the opportunity to train there.

AS: Your coming off what is arguably the best win of your career against Craig Doherty; would you say Castle is your toughest fight to date?

GB: Um I’m not sure about that because Craig Doherty is a great fighter, they both have similar styles but I’d say Doherty has more experience

AS: What do you know about your opponent and have you had the opportunity to watch any of Castle’s previous fights?

GB: Yeah I’ve seen the Graham Earl fight as well as his one with Ryan Barrett, from what I can see he’s only happy coming forward and seems a bit uncomfortable on the back foot that all I know about him really.

AS: You seem extremely confident is there anything about Henry Castle that worries you?

GB: He’s got a good left hook, that’s about it.

AS: How does it feel to be headlining such a big event?

GB: It’s great, I’ve headlined a few bills now but none of them is near as big as this one, so the pressure’s definitely on.

AS: Obviously you have to take one fight at a time, but is there anyone in the near future you have your sights set on?

GB: Yeah, well John Murray for a start, although to be honest I don’t care who it is as long as I’m fighting for the British Title, a year from now my aim is to be British Champion.
