Luke Campbell and Thomas Stalker have become the first British boxers to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in London.
Stalker became the first boxer to qualify for the Games after beating Russia’s Alexander Solyanikov 17-9 at the World Championships in Baku today. Campbell later scored an 11-9 win over Algeria’s Mohamed Ouadahi to book his place.
Campbell naw faces Bulgaria’s reigning champion Detelin Dalakliev in the quarter final.
Lowestoft middleweight Anthony Ogogo was not so lucky, he was defeated 17-12 against Brazilian Esquiva Falcao.
However, all is not lost for Ogogo. Under AIBA’s qualification rules, if Falcao goes on to claim a place in the 75kg final, Ogogo, as Falcao’s quarter-final opponent, will also qualify.
There was also good news for Irish pair Darren O’Neill and John Joe Nevin, who also booked their Olympic places with in Baku today.
