According to promoter Frank Warren, world lightweight champion Nate Campbell is keen to face the quick fisted Amir Khan in early 2009.
It looks as though, Campbell is set to first defend his title against former WBO super-featherweight king Joan Guzman but Warren spoke to the WBA/IBF and WBO lightweight champ at the Boxing Hall of Fame weekend recently and confirmed they discussed a possible fight with Khan.
"We spoke and he said we would like to make the fight," Warren said. "Let’s take it one fight at a time, and when the Gomez fight is out of the way, we’ll see what happens.
"What I do know is that Campbell’s fight with Joel Casamayor isn’t happening, so there might be an opportunity. What is really important is that Amir focuses on next weekend."
Khan clashes with former British super featherweight champion Michael Gomez in Birmingham this weekend(June 21) in Birmingham.
BBox:
The point I was making was not that Khan should be rushed into a title fight as I also feel that he isn't ready. My point was that I can see his career heading exactly the same way as calzaghe, whose only been allowed to fight competitive opponents at the end of his career, calzaghe should have had big fights in the US years ago. If anyone thinks Frank Warren is protecting Khan out of the goodness of his heart and so that khan can make money then they are deluded. Just ask David Haye.
RingFister:
Khan is being promoted well, but some people forget he's only had 17 fights. I think he's being moved along at a good pace. He will be gided to a world title but he will always be protected, I dont think he's got the the hart to go toe to toe and fight back and grind out a win when he's stearing defeat in the eyes.
Curtley:
Look at Vargas IBF champ at 22, ruined by Trinidad at 24 retired as a shell of a fighter at 30 getting battered by Mayorga who would not have been able to lace his boots in his prime. Then Mayweather matched very carefully all of his career retiring undefeated as P4P number 1. Yes the promoters owe the fans but also the fighters and people are supporting Amir in droves. GREAT PROMOTION!!!
Give him a chance
Curtley:
Amir Khan is 21 has only been a pro for just under three years. It is frustrating but Amir is being matched very well. A promoters job is to make a fighter as much money as possible, be as successful as possible and have as long at the top as possible. Khan is a greath talent brimming with confidence and if it was his choice he would fight Pacquio tommorow its just that he is not ready yet, after Gomez he should fight Romanov then one more fight against a tough mex vet, then any champ at LW.
Bad for Boxing
BBox:
Warren knows Campbell wont beat Guzman so Khan wont have to fight Campbell anyway. There's no way he'd let Khan fight Guzman. He's just goona keep matching Khan up with smaller men and no-hopers. Khan is his golden goose and warren is gonna get everything he can out of him. It's the same with Calzaghe, he's had a career fighting bums and now he's got 1 year left Warren has let him fight in America. Warren has no place being in the hall of fame.
