By Mike Sloan at Ringside: Anthony Crolla, a promising young lightweight contender from Manchester, England, had a much tougher time than expected with Juan Manuel Montiel in Las Vegas.
Crolla was forced to fight hard against the rugged Mexican and walked away with a split decision victory. Crolla displayed a much sharper overall game and landed the cleaner, harder punches, but Montiel kept things interesting with his relentless pressure.
In the end, Crolla, now 22-2 with 9 KOs, won via tallies of 77-75, 75-77 and 78-74. Montiel dropped to 6-5-3 with 1 KO.
The bout took place at the MGM Grand In Las Vegas on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s WBC title clash with Victor Ortiz
