Dazzo Williams calls it a day

By Elliot Worsell: Gutsy Hereford featherweight Dazzo Williams has decided to hang up his gloves following last month's British, Commonwealth and European title defeat at the fists of Dagenham's Nicky Cook.

The former British champion, who engaged in some of the best nine-stone domestic scraps in recent years, was thoroughly beaten by Cook inside two rounds and dropped for the count by a hellacious left hook to the body mid-way through the round.

Now, having reached British title standard, and having defended the coveted Lonsdale strap three times, Williams feels the time is right to put and end to his four-and-a-half-year professional career.

He bows out with a 12-3 (3) slate, and content in the knowledge that his toe-to-toe title defences against the likes of Roy Rutherford and Jamie McKeever, will live long in the memory.

His wife Katie explained to the Hereford Journal, that Dazzo's retirement won't spell an end to his association with boxing.

"Dazzo loves boxing, and now he wants to help young lads to get off the streets and take part in what is a very disciplined sport," Katie explained.

"He was brought up in one of the worst parts of London, and knows that taking up boxing helped him a great deal as he grew up.

"We had a meeting last night at Hinton Youth Club, and have decided to go ahead with forming an amateur boxing club - possibly to be called the Wye ABC.

"We will now be looking for funding from such sources as the Sports Lottery, as well as for all types of equipment, from a ring to punch bags."

The 31-year-old Williams will look back on his title-winning effort against Roy Rutherford in November 2003, and his tremendous performance in the rematch, seven months later, as his standout achievements in a career that started against Mickey Coveney in February 2001.
