Sprott(left) failed in his bid for Euro glory

By Tom Gray: Alexander Dimitrenko successfully defended his European heavyweight championship with a unanimous decision over Michael Sprott at the Dima-Sportcenter in Hamburg on Saturday night. Scores were 117-111, 116-111 and 119-108.
As can be the case in Germany, the scores did not reflect the action in the ring and Dimitrenko was made to look very ordinary. Sprott did make a slow start but went on to give the German based champion a nightmare from the midway point.
In the tenth the British challenger could have been awarded two knockdowns in quick succession, from a body shot and a right hand, only the referee ruled neither. To add insult to injury the official deducted a point from Sprott for hitting after the bell.
Dimitrenko improves to 32-1 (20 KO’s), while Sprott, the former European champion, drops to 36-17 (17 KO’s).
