Former champion Lopez to return against Seda in Puerto Rico

By Jose Santana Jr: It was announced on Thursday that former super flyweight world titlist Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-8-2, 32 KOs) and Cesar “Junito” Seda (18-0, 14 KOs) will be seeing action against each other on Aug. 27 in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico.

"The fight will happen at the 115-pound weight division and it will be the main event for the card which is planned for Aug. 27 in the city of Juana Diaz," stated Universal Promotions president Javier Bustillo in a statement. This will be Seda’s second consecutive fight at super flyweight after winning the IBO 112-pound title in September 2009.

In his last outing, also in September of 2009, Lopez lost a unanimous decision in the first defense of his WBO world title to touted young Filipino Marvin Sonsona. The 38-year-old Lopez enters this fight with plenty of experience having fought many notable fighters including Fernando Montiel, a fight in which he knocked Montiel down and lost a close decision.

The two fighters signed the contracts on Wednesday and also participated in a one month pre-weigh-in, as demanded by the Puerto Rican Boxing Commission, in which the fighters could not exceed 132 pounds. Commissioner Jose “Toto” Peñagaricano presided over the weigh-in in which both fighters comfortably made the limit.

Seda, 24, and a native of Juana Diaz, weighed in at 129.5 pounds. Lopez, who hails from Trujillo Alto, came in at 125 pounds. “Both boxers are in excellent condition one month out to the fight and it will be a great battle," commented Peñagaricano.

It is an interesting matchup as the veteran Lopez will look to impose his experience and gritty style over the up-and-coming Seda. Additionally, both fighters carry their own fan bases from their respective parts of the island; Lopez from the capitol area of San Juan and Seda from the southern city of Ponce.

The card is presented by Ponce-based company Universal Promotions and will also feature the four Galarza brothers – Kenny (13-1, 13 KOs), Kelvin (4-0, 1 KO), Israel (2-1, 1 KO), and Arnaldo who will be making his professional debut.
