North East promoter Phil Jeffries will move a little further south for his next Pro Box North East show, when he brings boxing to Scarborough’s ‘The Spa’ on Saturday May 11.
The Sunderland-based fight chief will host a lively evening of boxing, with well-supported local favourite, Danny Price, taking the headline spot.
Unbeaten cruiserweight Price, a former double ABA champion, has been progressing well in the pro ranks since turning over in 2011 and will be delighted, in his ninth outing, to be fighting for the first time at home.
“Danny’s a really nice lad and a good boxer,” stated Phil, “and I’ve known him for a long time as he used to box in the England amateur camp with my son, Tony.
“The cruiserweight scene is really hotting up in the UK, there are a lot of decent fighters all willing to face each other and Danny is right up there in the mix.
“This show will have a great atmosphere. Danny’s got a huge fan base and the whole town will be looking forward to watching him for the first time at home. It’s going to be electric.”
Although taking place in Yorkshire, the show will have a definite North East element to it, with Sunderland’s Kirk ‘Bulletproof’ Goodings (pictured) and Darlington’s Neil Hepper both set to appear.
Goodings has lost just one fight in nine outings, while Hepper will be looking to pick up his fifth win in his seventh pro contest.
“Kirk showed how good he is when he went the distance last year, at very short notice, with Steve Williams,” said Jeffries. “Although he lost that fight, it showed he can mix in top class because Williams fought for the British light-welterweight title just a few months later.
“I’m pleased to be getting both these boxers out on this Scarborough show, and it’s just a shame that young Tommy Ward will not be appearing now after picking up a cut in sparring.”
