By David Boyle Dundalk’s undefeated lightweight Michael Kelly has had a tough professional career so to say the least.
After having a great amateur career winning two Military World Championships Kelly found it hard to get fights as a pro, so much so that he sat out 2008 and only came back to fight in 2009. Having won fights by knockout and drawing one, of which was a bit harsh on Kelly. The Irishman is looking to take centre stage on the Irish scene in 2010.
“Having had a few fights last, year I have my confidence back and I’m looking to make a impact in 2010,” declared Michael.
Kelly has been some what overlooked in the lightweight scene in Ireland as EU Champion Andy Murray and Oisin Fagan have been top dogs for a while now. That of course is about to change as the two will meet in the National Stadium on the 13th February live on RTE TV.
Kelly is also featuring on the card and is looking to get an eight round fight under his belt. “If I can get the eight rounder done early this year then it will leave me time to go for the Irish title this year. Oisin Fagan has stated that he would fight me but first I need to get the eight rounder under my belt”, Kelly explained.
Having been inactive for so long Kelly is back training full time. “I am back training at full flow and I am in great shape, sparring Andy Murray has me sharp as a razor,” beamed Michael.
On the prospect of taking on stable mate Murray, Kelly doesn’t see it happening. “Id have to move gyms for it to happen and I am happy the way things have been going with John Breen so that doesn’t look likely,” said Kelly.
Kelly said that he wants the good fights, someone who is coming to fight and is willing to stand his ground. “That’s what I want and I think its something that all fighters want and I’m willing to fight anyone, Just get me the fights and I will show you all what I can do,” insisted Kelly..
Michael Kelly looks a determined guy, and one fighter who wants to fight for his recognition in 2010.
