By David Boyle: On a great night of Irish Boxing in Dublin, Irish and E.U. lightweight champion Andy Murray made it 19 fights unbeaten against veteran Oisin ‘Gael Force’ Fagan (25-8-0).
At a packed National Boxing Stadium the main event was a cracker and Murray showed his mettle and that he is ready to step up a level. Fagan entered the ring snarling and started the fight with an air of determination.
From the first bell Fagan charged forward catching Murray with overhand rights cleanly as Murray stood square on. This continued through the round before Murray gathered himself and started to fire back with crisp two and three punch combinations. The opening round, however, went to Fagan.
The second round started similar to the first with Fagan attacking and Murray circling out of the way. Murray started to land one and two punch combinations followed by left hooks to the body that shook Fagan to his boots.
By the end of the round Fagan’s left eye had a mouse growing under it.
It was the third round that saw the fight swing completely in Murray’s favour as he worked well behind combinations and big left hooks to the body and head. But Fagan would not stop coming forward even though the strain was starting to show on his face.
By the end of the round Fagan was bleeding from the nose and mouth and both eyes were swelling up.
In the fourth round Fagan came out raging once more with wild left and right hooks, charging Murray down. But Murray would not give ground and he kept answering Fagan with crisp combinations ending them with a double lead uppercut.
The end came in the fifth when Oisin slowed dramatically and felt the full force of all Andy’s punch’s . Murray continued with his crisp combinations and Fagan was eating them up. With his face starting to become a bloody mess the referee stepped in to stop the fight to stop Oisin Fagan from taking any more punishment.
Some of the crowd weren’t happy about the stoppage feeling that it was too early, but for this reporter the fight became too one sided and safety of the boxer is paramount. The fight was stopped at 2.45 of round five.
Barrett survives early scare
Prizefighter runner up Coleman Barrett, 10-1-0, had an early scare against Southampton based Colin Kenna, 16-9-2. Giving away reach and over two stone in weight Barrett started well against his out of shape opponent. Jabs and straight lefts were on the menu for Kenna as Barrett established his domination.
However all changed in round two. With Barrett in complete control Kenna threw a huge right hook that caught Barrett flush on the chin and sent him sprawling to the canvas. Barrett got to his feet but his eyes were in orbit. Kenna attacked relentlessly for the rest of the round but could not finish the dazed Barrett who stumbled back to his corner at the end of the round.
From then on it was all Barrett as he easily outworked Kenna. Barrett however has much to prove and may be too small for his style of fighting in the heavyweight division.
