On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings 8/21/11

By Derek Bonnett: The third week of August presented a lot of important action for fighters on the cusp of a SecondsOut ranking. Mexico’s Alfredo Angulo had previously been removed from our 154 pound rankings for one year of inactivity, but he returned to the ring with a first round KO over Joseph Gomez. Former U.S. Olympian, Demetrius Andrade scored the biggest victory of his career with a comprehensive unanimous decision over the upset-minded Grady Brewer in a junior middleweight contest.

Philadelphia’s Hank Lundy has rebounded from a disappointing defeat to John Molina Jr. with a stoppage of former world champion David Diaz at 135 pounds. Massachusetts native, Edwin Rodriguez continued his unbeaten march toward world class recognition at super middleweight with a quick win under the guidance of Ronnie Shields. Is there any place for these men in the SecondsOut world rankings? Only time will tell, but with some minor shifts, it is quite possible we will see more than one of these boxers appear before the close of 2011.

In SecondsOut ranked action, the results were produced entirely by boxing’s little men of the sport.

On Friday, August 19, at Khunmuangsri Stadium, Muang, Srisaket, Thailand, Tomas Rojas suffered an upset defeat at the hands of Suriyan Sor Rungvisai in a twelve round WBC super flyweight title bout. Rungvisai ended the impressive run of Rojas to claim the crown and elevate his record to 19-5-1 (7). Rojas, the Glencoffe Johnson of his division, fell to 36-13-3 (24).

Rungvisai, previously unranked, debuts at fourth among SecondsOut elite 115 pounders. His arrival pushes Hugo Cazares to second and Cesar Seda to third. Rojas falls from second to fifth. Juan Alberto Rosas and Drian Francisco have been removed from the rankings now that they will compete at bantamweight. Cristian Mijares, Oscar Ibarra, and Raul Martinez each rise one step to seventh, eighth, and ninth respectively. Unbeaten Leo Santa Cruz climbs aboard at tenth.

On Saturday, August 20, at Sumiyoshi Ward Center, Osaka, Osaka, Japan, Rocky Fuentes kept busy with a unanimous decision over Hirofumi Mukai in a twelve round flyweight bout. Fuentes improved his record to 29-6-2 (17). Mukai tasted defeat for the first time as a pro and fell to 5-1 (0).

Fuentes hangs on to his SecondsOut number ten ranking at 112, but he is in need of greater opposition to elevate the ranking he earned mostly through attrition.

Also on the same date, at La Cetto Vineyard, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, Fernando Montiel stopped Alvaro Perez in a three rounds of a super bantamweight bout. Perez hit the canvas in the third round and the bout was called at the 1:26 mark. Montiel has put two victories between him and his last defeat to Nonito Donaire. He appears to have carried his power to 122 pounds from bantamweight. Montiel, in pursuit of a world title in his fourth division, improved his ledger to 46-3-2 (36). Perez dipped to 21-4-1 (12).

Montiel, a champion at 112, 115, and 118 pounds, holds onto his number seven SecondsOut ranking at super bantamweight.
