By Andrew Wake: Revenge is the objective for Leeds light-welterweight prospect Adil Anwar when he steps into the ring at Elland Road in his home city on Saturday March 27.
As yet no opponent as been named for the stylish 22-year-old but he hopes that the man coming out of the opposing corner on fight night will be Blackburn’s Graeme “Dezzi” Higgingson.
Higginson became the first (and so far only) man to defeat Anwar when he picked up a six round decision in late 2007 but the now more mature Yorkshire man feels the time is right to put the record straight.
“It’s a fight for me that I need to win and avenge in order for me to progress my career,” stated Anwar, 7 – 1 (3 KOs).
“A lot of people said I won the first fight and I thought I’d done enough, but it was a tough fight and I blame myself as I wasn’t training like I should have been. Now I’m putting all the hard work in instead of slacking off and I really believe I can go far in the sport.”
Last November Anwar scored his best win to date when he outworked Darren Askew over six rounds.
Defeating a man with a 6 – 3 record may not sound particularly impressive but considering that Askew had just come off a third round knockout of former British title challenger Dean Harrison, it was certainly a win the raised the eyebrows of those in the know.
“He was an awkward fighter with him being a southpaw and I smudged my work a bit in the later rounds,” Anwar recalled, “but apart from that it was a good test for me and now I’m looking to fight bigger and better people and get to the top.”
And he’s got part of the climb up the championship ladder mapped out in his mind already.
He said: “My trainer Mark [Bateson] knows I’ll fight anyone at light-welterweight or even welterweight. After beating Higginson, I’d like to fight either Curtis Woodhouse for his belt [International Masters] or Steve Williams for the English title.
