Jamie Speight wants to be like John Wayne – a western star. Few boxers from the south west area of the country have garnered championship success in the squared circle.
But Speight, from Kingsteignton in Devon, intends to really stamp the district on the boxing map by winning an abundance of titles.
The next step in his quest for glory happens on Friday night when he tops the bill in a vacant British Masters tilt live on SecondsOut.com against Grimsby’s Kevin Hooper.
“The majority of good boxers don’t come from down my way,” Speight, 23, said. “We’ve had the odd the few like Scott Dann and Glen Catley but most of best boxers come from up north or the big cities.
“We’re seen as probably the least talented area in the country. I plan to do my best to change that and this fight being on Youtube is nice for me to showcase what I can do.”
The bout with Hooper pits two young prospects on the up against each other.
“A lot of prospects get hand feed but I’m at that level where if I want to go somewhere I’ve got to face people who are in the same position as me,” Speight stated.
“Kevin Hooper is the perfect fight to move me forwards because he’s good, he’s a capable and he looks to be a well schooled boxer with the way he picks his shots.
“Right the way through my amateur career I boxed anybody. It didn’t matter if they were open class, if they had umpteenEngland vests, or whatever and it’s the same in the pros.
“I boxed Nigel Wright, who is potentially world class, on ten days notice so I’m not worried about anyone.”
Promoter Carl Greaves has assembled an action-packed undercard that features the return of unbeaten Cuban sensations Alexei Collado and Luis Garcia.
Collado makes a step up in class when he squares off with tough Venezuelan Franklin Varela – a recent world title eliminator combatant – while Garcia will meet as yet to be confirmed opponent.
Also on the bill, Sleaford’s popular Amir Unsworth tackles Luton’s Gavin Putney, Hull prospect Joel Haigh faces Jatinder Johal and Sammy Mac makes his pro debut against Matt Seawright.
The full bill can be seen live here on SecondsOut.com. The action starts at 7.30pm
