

News has reached SecondsOut that Stourport middleweight Ernie Smith has died. The way he died is not clear but reports on the internet say he may have taken his own life.
Ernie was a tough well respected journeyman, who fought and tested some of Britain’s most talented fighters from light-middleweight up to super-middleweight. Ernie was the type of fighter that would travel anywhere at short notice and could always be relied upon. He will be greatly missed.
****** WBC super-heavyweight champ Carl Froch has reportedly refused to defend his title against Mikkel Kessler in the city of Herning in Denmark. Although Froch has been promised more money to defend the title in Herning he insists he wants to face Kessler 150 miles away in Copenhagen as it is an easier venue for British fans to get to.
The fight on April 17 is part of the ‘Super Six’ tournament organized by American cable network, Showtime.
****** Irish middleweight John Duddy will face 23 year-old Mexican Michael Medina in a non title 10 rounder at the Cowboy Stadium in Dallas on March 13. Manny Pacquiao tops the Bob Arum promoted card against African Joshua Clottey.
***** Manchester based heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury is set to continue his career in the USA. Tyson, who has won all nine fights so far including a controversial points win over John McDermott, is scheduled to fight on February 27 and March 12.
