Welsh News Round-up: Lockett, Pryce And Much More

By John Clifford: Gary Lockett (30-2-0) former WBU world middleweight champion and former challenger of Kelly Pavlik’s world title has taken out both a boxing manager’s and trainer’s licence.

For a man who always saw boxing as a job rather than a passion and had stated he was done completely with the game after announcing his retirement, this decision is quite a surprise. However he has already negotiated deals with Frank Maloney for three of his fighters including the promising unbeaten Featherweight prospect Ricky Owen (11-0-0). Lockett is also being used as a part time trainer and advisor for three welsh amateurs who have decided to turn pro, Ryan and Jeff Evans and Dan Harris.

The fledgling promotional company of Joe Calzaghe has announced the date for it’s next fight card - 21st of August at the Newport Leisure Centre. The majority of the Enzo Calzaghe stable have fights arranged, firstly there is the return of Bradley Pryce (27-7-0), the former commonwealth light middleweight champion who fights Michael Monaghan (18-25-0). This is Pryce’s first outing since losing his belt to Matthew Hall and claiming to be suffering from bulimia. Also returning for his first fight since losing his WBA world light welterweight title to Andreas Kotelink is Gavin ’The Rock’ Rees, (27-1-0), as of yet his opponent is still to be confirmed. Other boxers on the bill are light heavyweight Harry Miles (3-1-0) and light welterweight Jamie Todd (2-0-1).

Staying with Enzo Calzaghe’s stable there has been another defection, with light middleweight Kerry Hope (11-2-0) following Enzo Maccarinelli to the Karl Ince gym in Oldham. Hope who has had 4 of his last 5 fights cancelled, stated that he himself was responsible for selling tickets for one of his fights and this led him to concentrate less on boxing and more on the business side, leaving him confused with where his career was heading under the Calzaghe setup he felt it was in his best interest to leave.

Lastly as many boxing fans are probably aware and as reported last time Nathan Cleverly’s, (16-0-0), next fight has been confirmed against Danny McIntosh, (10-0-0). For both Cleverly’s Commonwealth title and also the vacant British light heavyweight title, the bout will take place on the 18th July at York Hall and will be screened on ITV 4 as the main event of a Hennessey Promotions card.
