By Aaron Screen: Welsh fans have been promised they are in for a treat courtesy of Calzaghe Promotions, when they promote at the Newport Leisure Centre on Friday, November 20.
Calzaghe will be hoping to emulate the previous show’s success and if the hype around Wales is anything to go by this should not be a problem. Topping the bill will be the recently rejuvenated Bradley Pryce, who takes on Hungarian Latvian Sergejs Savrinovics, who has a record of seven wins in 23 fights.
Pryce is looking forward to getting back into action, and is just two months removed from his previous fight against Michael Monaghan. With Ryan Rhodes taking the European junior middleweight crown from Jamie Moore last week in a WBC title eliminator, and Anthony Small defending his two domestic belts in late November, the junior -middleweight division is a hive of activity. Pryce doesn’t want to be left out.
“I’m really looking forward to my next fight and getting another win under my belt,” said Pryce. “But I’m looking to get it out of the way because there are bigger things to come. It’s an important fight because it’s a big year ahead for me and there are things I want to achieve.”
The show titled “Back 2 the Future” will also feature highly touted Tony Doherty who returns after a long lay-off. Doherty, who boasts an impressive record of just one defeat in 22 fights, turned down five offers to move away from the Newbridge gym when promoter Frank Warren split with the Calzaghe camp last year.
“It’s 18 months since I last fought and it’s been a nightmare, I was supposed to fight with Joe in America and I had a few personal problems, but it didn’t stop me training,” said Doherty.
“My love of boxing has never gone away Boxing runs in my family and at a young age I dreamt of being a world champion and I believe I should be up there with the big names. I’ve got a great boxing brain and, technically, I think I’m one of the best boxers in the world.”
Also appearing on the bill are local fighters Justyn Hugh and Lee Churcher, both of whom remain undefeated and both are huge ticket sellers. Calzaghe seems to have realised the potential of adding the Newport Fighters who were both well supported when they last fought at the centre on the Hatton Promotions bill a short while ago.

Former WBA junior-welterweight champ Gavin Rees, unlike the previous occasion will not feature on the bill as he will be busy preparing for the highly anticipated next instalment of Prizefighter. He will feature alongside a who’s who of domestic fighters which include Ted Bami, David Barnes and Colin Lynes to name a few. On the back of one of the most watched Prizefighter, another great line-up is on show battling for the chance to win the top prize of £32,000.
However, for Rees it’s much more about a chance to return to the spotlight, an opportunity he insists he’s ready to take. “I am very excited, I want to get back on the map and this is the best way to do it,” insisted Rees.
“I think the format suits me down to the ground, I’ve got a good chin and love to get stuck in and the fact that there are some big names in there is good because my win will mean more. If I go flat out for nine rounds it’ll be hard for the others to keep up with me and hopefully it’ll act as a springboard for a title fight in 2010.”
