Cagri Ermis reached the highlight of his up-and-down career on Saturday night when he captured the vacant WBF Middleweight title by defeating Portuguese boxer Vitor Sa at the Braamkamp 1 arena in Hamburg,Germany.
With clever boxing from the outside, Ermis controlled the fight with sharp and well-timed punches from the get-go, and rarely allowed Sa to get close enough to do any damage. The German boxer fought a very disciplined fight, and while game veteran Sa never stopped trying he was outboxed and outmaneuvered by his younger foe.
Ermis was originally to challenge former Champion Karama Nyilawila for the title last December, but first the bout was postponed when the German got injured, and later the title was declared vacant when Nyilawila, overdue a defense, decided not to honor his contract and instead take a non-title bout, so Ermis did well to adjust to his new co-challenger.
After 12 interesting rounds, all three judges had Ermis a clear winner by scores of 120-109 (Artur Ellensohn), 120-108 (Zbigniew Lagosz) and 117-111 (Timo Habighorst). Referee was Frank Michael Maass.
The new world champion improved his professional record to a deceivingly modest 13-10-2 (4), while Vitor Sa dropped to 26-7 (5). The fight headlined a massive show promoted by EC Boxpromotion
