By Derek Gionta, from Las Vegas:

James "The King" De La Rosa (23-2, 13 KOs), of San Benito, Texas survived a late surge by Mexican warrior Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo (22-5, 18 KOs) to defeat the Tijuana native by a ten round unanimous decision on the opening Showtime Pay-Per-View bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The bout had a 162-lb contract weight, with Angulo rehydrating to 180 lbs, where De La Rosa gained 7-1/2 lbs by fight night.

De La Rosa started quickly, using his boxing skills from both the orthodox and southpaw stance, scoring a knockdown in the second round with a left hook to the head of Angulo moments before the bell sounded.

Angulo had trouble defending the slick offensive attack of De La Rosa and cutting off the ring with any effectiveness.

The ensuing rounds played out in similar fashion.

Angulo’s surge began in the seventh round until catching a hard right hook from De La Rosa and then losing a point for a low blow shortly thereafter.

De La Rosa continued according to his blueprint in the eighth.

Angulo’s trainer Virgil Hunter implored Angulo to attack his opponent.

The ninth and tenth rounds had some dramatic events as Angulo continued pressing forward, now landing big shots on De La Rosa and seemingly hurting him, disrupting his coast to the finish line.

De La Rosa stayed on his feet and held on long enough to hear the final bell, earning the biggest win of his career.

The judges scored the fight 98-90, 96-92, and 99-89.

Secondsout scored the fight 97-91.
