By Derek Gionta, ringside: Oleksandr Gvozdyk, 12-0 (10), of Ukraine, impressively stopped durable veteran Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba, 24-5-2 (10), of Malawi on the Kovalev-Ward Pound for Pound undercard in Las Vegas after the eighth round in a scheduled ten rounder.

Gvozdyk held on to his NABF light heavyweight strap and most importantly made a bigger name for himself.

Chilemba, a slick boxer, recently went the distance with the Krusher himself, and proved to have a chin willing to accept the challenge of a tough Ukrainian such as Gvozdyk.

Chilemba got off to a good start in the first three rounds, boxing well from distance, using his jab, and keeping a tight defense. Gvozdyk maintained his poise and had an answer for most of what Chilemba threw at him.

Gvozdyk picked it up in the fourth, unleashing a violent flurry on Chilemba as he laid against the ropes. Chilemba came back with a few good shots of his own but not enough to delay the momentum of Gvozdyk.

The next four rounds were all Gvozdyk as Chilemba wore down each round with less attack.

After the eighth, Chilemba’s body language and facial expression told the story as his corner stopped the fight soon thereafter.

Top Rank’s Brad Goodman commented after the fight, "A new star was born tonight."

The tough Ukrainian managed by Egis Klimas and trained by Robert Garcia earned a signature win and became only the first to stop Chilemba.

Gvozdyk commented after the fight, "I wasn’t nervous. I had 250 amateur fights."

Boxing has a new threat in the light heavyweight division: Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
