Chambers Defeats Dimitrienko in Germany

American heavyweight contender ‘Fast’ Eddie Chambers put forward quite possibly the best all-round performance of his career on Saturday night, after he dropped previously undefeated Alexander Dimitrienko twice on his way to scoring a highly impressive majority decision victory at The Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Chambers 35-1 (18) known for his sometimes overly relaxed outings, obviously prepared for this evening’s contest and he came into the ring at a career low 208lbs. Facing a much bigger man, the Philadelphian refused to shy away from conflict and he beat Dimitrienko 29-1 (19) with extremely fast and accurate combination punching.

The fight was well contested throughout the opening handful of rounds but Chambers began to hurt his man from the fifth round onward. He thumped Dimitrienko in the seventh frame and, after a clever body shot forced the big Ukrainian into a corner in obvious distress, referee Genaro Rodriguez offered an eight count, giving Chambers a valuable 10-8 round.

Things got better for the slick 27-year-old American three rounds later. Dimitrienko had forced himself to let his hands go in the eighth and ninth and, given that the fight was in Germany, he could be confident that he had a chance to pull out the win on points. That belief was shattered in the tenth when Chambers, who was extremely accurate with his power shots tonight, dropped the big 26-year-old for the second time with a left right combination.

Dimitrienko got up but was unwilling to engage for much of the final two rounds and, on the sporadic occasion when the two fighters did trade mutual leather, Chambers more often than not got the better of the action. In victory, this new and definitely improved version of Eddie Chambers is now in line to face WBO heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko later in the year.

Scores: 113-113; 116-111; 117-109
