Cotto-Margarito II Venue Ruling

By Ron Valderrama: The Antonio Margarito saga continues as an alternate venue is sought for Cotto-Margarito II.

At the time of writing this article Margarito was arriving in New York for his eye exam with the New York Athletic Commission doctors. A ruling is expected from the New York Athletic Commission (NYAC) tomorrow (Nov22) regarding his license issue.

Margarito suffered a fractured eye socket in his loss to Manny Pacquiao last year and has the NYAC concerned. You may remember Margarito was denied a license by the Commission on October 31st. A meeting last Wednesday between commission doctors, who expressed concerns about the eye and doctors supporting Margarito pleaded their piece, which prompted Bob Arum to consider a back-up venue should the NYAC vote against granting Margarito a license.

This reporter spoke with Showdown Promotions’ Sergio Diaz, who is also co-manager of Margarito late last night and they confirmed that Margarito is licensed in Arizona. Boxing fans in Arizona would salivate if this epic battle came to Phoenix and have proven by the sold out shows that they want more.

It was quite apparent by the turn out for the Jesus Gonzalez fight on ESPN Friday Night Fights over the summer. With the show 12 days away Top Rank is eager to tie down a venue quickly and is considering Dallas, Denver, Ft. Worth and Phoenix as a few of the choices. The truth is nobody knows where the fight will be if its not in New York, but what is known is this fight will happen.

My sources say they will keep me posted. Antonio Margarito will continue training in Mexico for this fight and after watching some of his sparring videos it appears Margarito is fit to fight. Showdown Promotions up and coming fighter, Juanito Gonzalez is also training at Margarito’s high altitude camp in Mexico and says Margarito looks ready to fight. The possibility of the fight coming to the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix has me excited, for one I live here and two, boxing fans in Arizona have waited years for a bout like this. Tuesday’s NYAC ruling will determine if the fight will be in New York or a new venue, none the less this will be one of the great fights of the year.
