The highly anticipated welterweight unification bout between Miguel Cotto (WBA) and Antonio Margarito (IBF) will reportedly take place on July 26 at the MGM Grand Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The event will be seen on HBO PPV. A formal announcement is expected at a press conference next week in Los Angeles.
The 27-year-old Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) is near the top of many “Pound-for-Pound” lists, having defeated former or current world champions Cesar Bazan, Carlos Maussa, Lovemore N’dou, DeMarcus Corley, Randall Bailey, Ricardo Torres, Paul Malignaggi, Carlos Quintana, Zab Judah and Shane Mosley.
Two-time 147 lbs. world champion Margarito, 30, is originally from Torrence, CA and now resides in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. With a record of 36-5, 26 KOs, Margarito recently defeated Kermit Cintron for a second time to lift the IBF crown. Margarito had defeated Cintron in April 2005 in a successful defense of the WBO title.
