Filipinos, Mexicanos Highlight Pacquiao-Marquez Off-TV Card

By: Mike Sloan at ringside in Vegas: Veteran Filipino welterweight Dennis Laurente ended his bout with Ayi Bruce with one punch in the seventh round, allowing him to improve to 37-3-4 with 20 KOs. After a relatively uneventful bout where Laurente was seemingly ahead on all the scorecards due to being the busier fighter, he threw a perfect straight left hand that landed squarely on the New Yorker’s jaw. Bruce fell onto the seat of his trunks and never beat the count of referee Robert Byrd and was officially counted out at :57 of the frame. Bruce dipped to 13-5 with 6 KOs.

Jose Benavidez Jr., a very promising young junior welterweight contender from Phoenix, was simply way too much for the overmatched Sammy Santana (4-5-2) and cruised to an easy six round unanimous decision. Benavidez (14-0, 12 KOs) surprisingly didn’t take his Puerto Rican opponent out as he scored knockdowns in the first (twice), second and fourth rounds. He won the decision 60-50 on all three judges’ scorecards.

East Los Angeles’ Victor Pasillas won his pro debut against the winless Jose Garcia (0-4) in a featherweight bout via unanimous decision. Pasillas (1-0), from King City, CA, was the busier and better fighter and coasted to scores of 40-36 on all three cards.

In the first bout of the afternoon, Fernando Lumacad of Manila, won a hard-fought and well-earned unanimous decision over Joseph Rios. Lumacad (25-3-3, 12 KOs) was the overall better fighter, but knockdowns in rounds two and five of the San Antonio fighter were difference in the super flyweight bout and he won via tallies of 77-74, 77-73 and 78-72. Rios fell to 10-6-2 with 4 KOs.
