Floyd Praises Hatton But Amir Must Prove Himself Against Vargas

Floyd Mayweather Jr has praised the courage and fighting ability of the now retired Ricky Hatton but says WBA junior-welterweight champ Amir Khan must prove himself before he is prepared to share a ring with him.

Mayweather Jr, who scored a 10th round tko win over ‘The Hitman’, in December 2007, speaking to blokely.com, said: “I take my hat off to Ricky Hatton; he was a true warrior and a true champion. I think that we had one hell of a fight when we did face each other and whatever he’s doing now, I wish him and his family all the best.

Mayweather added: “I know after he faced me he was never the same again but the only thing he can do is keep his fingers crossed that hopefully he can go down in the Hall of Fame one day.”

Whilst Mayweather Jr acknowledges Hatton’s fighting ability he feels Amir Khan should prove himself against Jesse Vargas before stepping up and challenging him.

“We want Amir Khan to fight the future of boxing, which is my fighter Jessie Vargas,” said Mayweather Jr. “If Khan gets past Jessie Vargas, then Khan has a fight with Floyd Mayweather.

“You’ve got to earn a fight with Mayweather. He(Khan) just fought a Zab Judah that I fought six years ago, I fought a young, strong, hungry Zab Judah and he fought a Zab Judah that’s a lot older. So once he fights Vargas then Amir Khan has a fight with Floyd Mayweather.”

Mayweather Jr challenges Victor Ortiz for the WBC welterweight title in Las Vegas on Saturday (September 17).
