George Benton, one of the finest boxers ever to fight out of Philadelphia, passed away in the early hours of Monday morning(September 19). He was 78 years-old.
The boxing icon died at St Joseph’s Hospital in North Philly at around 3.40am, after battling Pneumonia. Benton was a highly skilled boxer who fought all the top boxers in the 1950’s and 60’s.
His career came to an end in 1970 after being shot in the back, forcing his retirement. The bullet was intended for someone else. He was one of those boxers that never really got the true respect he deserved.
Unable to fight again due to the severity of the gunshot wound Benton became a trainer and soon carved out a reputation as a top trainer, guiding the likes of Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whittaker, Meldrick Taylor, Leon Spinks, Joe Frazier, Tyrell Biggs and Tex Cobb.
