
Rodrigo “Gato” Guerrero (16-3-1, 10KOs) claimed the vacant IBF super flyweight title at the Auditorio Municipal in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico on Saturday night when he scored a sixth round technical decision over San Antonio, TX’s Raul “Cobra” Martinez (28-2, 16KOs).
The bigger punching Guerrero of Mexico City, decked Martinez with a straight left in the third round. Martinez recovered and came back strongly by virtue of some neat boxing and counter punching. But in the sixth round, he suffered a cut over his right eye from a accidental clash of heads. The ringside doctor advised he could not continue so the fight went to the scorecards as per IBF rules if a fight is stopped after four completed rounds following an accidental injury. The scores were 59-54 57-56, 57-56.
On the undercard big puncher Daniel “Galeno” Sandoval (22-2, 22KOs) of Guadalajara, , floored Jorge “Pantera” Silva (17-2-1, 15KOs) three times before scoring a 10th round tko win.
In a flyweight bout Monterrey, Mexico’s Francisco Rodriguez (5-0, 4KOs) was forced to travel the full four rounds for the first time when he outscored Ciudad Obregon, s Jorge Guerrero (8-8, 7KOs).
