Tri Nguyen at ringside: Friday Night’s card at the Washington Convention Center in downtown Washington D.C was a coming out party of sorts for several DC based prospects. Alexander “The Great” Johnson, Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell, and Henry “Sugar Poo” Buchanan are regarded as some of the finest prospects in the game today, well on their way to a top-ten ranking or title contention in the near future. None of them disappointed on this
night.

Alexander Johnson’s (9-0, 3 KO, Oxon Hill, MD) Light Heavyweight bout
against William Gill (9-24, 7 KO, Toms River, NJ) was competitive from
the outset. Johnson used his effective counterpunching and slick defense to win in convincing style. All three judges scored the scheduled six round bout 59-55. In the third round, Johnson had Gill hurt against the ropes but was unable to finish him. Gill has a very reliable chin and took some substantial shots to the head, but never seemed to be in serious trouble. Although Johnson packs alot of muscle on his frame (he has a similar build to former Super Middleweight champion Jeff Lacy) he seems to be a counterpuncher with good footwork and an elusive defense. He needs to be busier and let his hands go when given the opportunity but seems to be developing into a nice
prospect in the division.

Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell is a bona fide contender in the Heavyweight division. The former college football player at Michigan State is making a smooth transition to the boxing ring and Friday night’s performance reminded many why he’s considered a star in the making. Mitchell (16-0-1, 10 KO, Brandywine, MD) came out aggressively against a tough opponent in Ryan Thompson (9-9, 6 KO, Cleveland, OH) with hard body shots and 3 and 4-punch combinations. By the second round, Thompson was bleeding on the left side of his face and primarily on the defensive. The fight was stopped at 2:32 of the third round after Thompson was taking excessive punishment and was not effectively defending himself. Mitchell moves well for a heavyweight and is clearly a natural athlete. He has taken to boxing quickly and seems to improve with every fight. His next bout will be a nationally televised fight on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights on May 7 against Ashanti Jordan. It’ll be a true test for Mitchell against a tough opponent in his first scheduled 10 round fight.

Henry “Sugar Poo” Buchanan’s scheduled 8 round Super Middleweight bout
with Julius Fogle was the main event of the evening. Neither Buchanan (19-2, 12 KO, Capital Heights, MD) nor Fogle (15-3, 10 KO, Cary NC) seemed willing to be the aggressor and the action seemed to stall much of the time as they stood in the center of the ring feinting punches. When the punches did fly, the action was fast and intense, with Buchanan delivering the harder, cleaner punches. His deceptively tight defense prevented Fogle from posing much of a threat and the judges awarded a Unanimous Decision in favor of Buchanan. He later admitted that he injured his right hand early in the bout and had to adopt a more defensive posture. Buchanan’s record is nearing the 20-win mark that typically brings more national exposure and he likely will get an opportunity to challenge a contender in the coming months.
